The maritime Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province. It is an island in the Gulf of St Lawrence with rolling hills and surrounded by white sandy beaches and red sandstone cliffs separated away from the Canada mainland.
Prince Edward Island is always remembered as "the birthplace of confederation", where the idea of Canada was incepted nearly 150 years ago.
Agriculture is the most important industry in the province. Due to limited farming area of the island, most farmers produce by small-scale agriculture. Currently Prince Edward Island grows a third of Canada's potato. The coastal fishing communities are famous for lobster and oyster fishing, and mussel farming.
The largest city on the island is the provincial capital Charlottetown. It is intrinsically a harbour on the south shore, the central location makes it a natural transportation hub. Over the last ten years, traditional shops gave way to large shopping malls, and residential areas take on new looks.
Urban developments are mainly concentrated along areas at the water front, close to the city's commercial corridor, and out to the airport. The downtown business district is continuously expanding due to demands from government and private sectors.
